Neptune in the Community

Christmas Giving

This Christmas, Neptune employees pitched in to donate food, toiletries, cleaning products, toys and other gifts to help make Christmas a little brighter for a North Van family, identified by our community partner, North Shore Neighbourhood House.

Manager of Engineering and Environment Jurgen Franke and Environmental Systems Specialist Stacy Bell help load just some of the many toys, gifts, food and other household supplies that were donated as part of Neptune’s support of a local family at Christmas.

Shoreline Cleanup

Harbour View Park is a narrow strip of land that runs alongside Lynn Creek and ends where the freshwater creek empties into Burrard Inlet. It is a favourite spot for families, dog walkers, bird watchers and beachcombers. An observation deck at the end of the trail delivers a unique view of the bustling industrial waterfront and a wide angle view of Vancouver’s skyline.

On Saturday, September 23, Neptune employees and members of the community came together to clean up the shoreline and trail at Harbour View Park, removing 80 pounds of garbage! The volunteers covered just under one kilometer of shoreline, picking up left behind and washed up trash and more than 150 cigarette butts.

“At Neptune Terminals, we believe in making our local community a better place to live, work and play,” says Neptune president Jim Belsheim. “This park and shoreline are adjacent to our terminal, and keeping them clean is a way we can contribute to enhancing our local environment.”

Supporting our Firefighters

Last year, Neptune Terminals donated $7,000 to the North Vancouver City Fire Department for the purchase of sophisticated new CPR training equipment. The state-of-the-art SmartMan Manikin provides a realistic feel and real time digital feedback, allowing first responders themselves to evaluate and improve their skill in this important lifesaving technique.

Aboriginal Education

In December, Neptune made a donation to the Urban Spirit Foundation for two scholarships to help Aboriginal youth from the North Shore pursue post-secondary education.  This is the first year of a three-year funding commitment.

The Urban Spirit Foundation is a charitable organization that works with urban Aboriginals living in the region, helping them move from poverty to self-sufficiency through education and employment training opportunities, secondary and post-secondary scholarships and bursaries, and community based programs and projects.

The Foundation was created by the founders of ACCESS, a non-profit organization formed in 1999 through the collaboration of six Aboriginal community organizations and funded by Human Resources Development Canada.

Support for Sports

As part of our commitment to being a good neighbour, Neptune sponsors a variety of youth sports, primarily at the introductory levels. “Investing in kids is good for the whole community,” says Neptune President, Jim Belsheim. “Sports helps kids develop self-esteem, leadership, teamwork and other social skills that will serve them into adulthood.”

The youth sports that Neptune sponsors include:

North Shore Girls Soccer Club: The NSGSC is one of the largest sports clubs in Western Canada with approximately 3,500 registered players. Neptune sponsors the U6 and U7 Pee Wee teams.

North Van Football Club: The NVFC is made up of over 3,600 youth soccer players. Neptune sponsors the U5 KickStart program, intended to introduce 3 and 4 year olds to the game while meeting friends and staying active.
