Challenger Baseball

The Challenger Baseball program welcomes all comers! Whether you’re four years old or 72, there are no barriers to participation. The program is a division of Highlands Little League Baseball in North Vancouver, providing individuals with cognitive or physical disabilities the opportunity to enjoy the full benefits of participation in a team sport activity at a level adapted to their abilities.

Challenger baseball games are played in a fun, safe environment where no score is kept. Able-bodied “Buddy” volunteers are assigned to assist each Challenger Baseball player during the games. Pushing wheelchairs around the base path, helping players hold the bat and swing, or providing protection from a batted ball are just a few of the ways the Buddies offer a safe and inclusive experience for Challenger Baseball participants.

“Another valued component of Challenger Baseball is the opportunity for participating families to share similar experiences and exchange ideas”, says Tony Makowsky, Highlands Challenger Baseball Division Coordinator and parent of daughter Jessica, pictured right. “We have been running this program for over 20 years on the North Shore and it’s currently the second-largest Challenger Baseball League in BC.”

Each participant is treated just like any other player in a conventional baseball program. All players are outfitted in uniforms, use similar, adaptive equipment, and play their games on regular baseball diamonds with bleachers and dugouts at Norgate Park. This year, Neptune is funding new uniforms for the Buddies so they are easily identifiable for players and families.

“And there will be plenty of Buddies needed, with current 2024 registration approaching 100 players!” Tony confirms.
