Keeping Seniors Active

Keeping seniors active

Neptune prioritizes supporting both youth and seniors in the community. Recently, we invested in Keep Well, a free exercise and wellness program for older adults that promotes fitness, health awareness, wellness education, and social contact to help seniors lead active, independent lives.

The program, which began over 37 years ago, now operates at eight locations from Parkgate to Dundarave. It offers an hour of physical exercise, followed by optional activities such as blood pressure checks, health coaching, massage, guest speakers, social engagement, and other wellness resources.

“Thanks to support from organizations like Neptune, our programs remain inclusive and free to attend,” says Carole Kellough, a Keep Well director. “Seniors from around the North Shore are encouraged to observe a class before registering. We also offer a wide selection of wellness resources on our website.”

On September 8th, Keep Well held a walkathon to maintain community engagement, honor Bette Rumble—a former member and benefactor—and raise funds to help cover instructor and administrative fees. Neptune’s funding also contributes to these expenses. Keep Well members completed a 5km walk from John Lawson Park to Dundarave Pier and back, enjoying a post-walk barbecue, entertainment, and prize draws. As one member put it, “What a positive and uplifting experience. I thoroughly enjoyed it.”
