Electric Tugs in the Port of Vancouver

Neptune is proud to be at the forefront of sustainability in our operations. Almost a year ago, thanks to a partnership between Neptune, Elk Valley Resources and SAAM Towage Canada Inc., we took a big step forward with the deployment of two 100% electric tugboats (Etugs) into the Port of Vancouver. This is a significant investment in decarbonizing port operations—and that’s not the only benefit. Etugs also emit considerably less marine noise, benefiting marine life in the harbour where they operate.
Several months in, these new Etugs have integrated seamlessly with planning for arrivals and departures of vessels at our terminal, ensuring tugs are always ready and available for harbour assist vessel moves at Neptune’s Berth 1.
A first in the Port of Vancouver, these innovative ElectRA 2300 SX tugs reduce CO2 emissions in Elk Valley Resources’ global supply chain. Designed by Vancouver-based Robert Allan Ltd. and powered by BC’s hydroelectric grid, these Etugs showcase what’s possible for a greener future in shipping. “To see this initiative come to fruition, and succeed, has been very rewarding,” says Jeff Crawford, Neptune’s Director, Marine Logistics and Quality Management and a North Shore resident. “The success of the Etugs in the Port of Vancouver has given SAAM confidence to order a third electric tug for operations in Chile—demonstrating what’s working here can work globally.”
